WJHS "In The Giving Mood"

Written by
WJHS students raise funds for Joplin High school

In May 2011, a devastating tornado ripped through the heart of Joplin, MO, destroying homes, schools and businesses and claiming over 160 lives.  In September, WJHS students collected money to help purchase books to restock the shelves of the Joplin High School library.  Our wrap-up classes competed against one another in a "Penny War" change collection contest.   The object was for each class to collect as many silver coins as possible during the “war” while simultaneously “sabotaging” the other classes with pennies or bills.  (Each penny subtracted 1 cent and a dollar bill subtracted a dollar from the total).  Collection containers were set up on the stage for students to fill before school each day.  At the end of the week, we had collected a total of $1381.00!!  The leaders for each grade were Mrs. Henderson, Mr. Compardo, and Mr. Williams.

The "Penny War" was tied into the One For Books program through our Scholastic Book fair.  For every dollar collected through One For Books, Scholastic donates a book to one of their charities - so we also helped to put 1381 books into the hands of children in need.

WJHS students donate to the Kumler Outreach Ministry

Junior high students donated canned foods recently that will be donated to the Kumler Outreach Ministry Food Pantry.  We appreciate the kindness and generosity shown by our students, parents, and community members in helping the cause.  A total of 19 students will have the opportunity to help deliver the items next week to the food pantry.  Our top three sellers were: Zach Hinds (7th grade), Derrick Cox (7th grade), and Austin Robbs (7th grade).

The staff at WJHS salutes all our students in "Deciding to Be Better" and making the world a better place for others.
