Calculate a GPA
Class Rank and Grade Point Average (GPA)
Per the Student Handbook, class rank is determined by weighted grade point average (GPA). Weights are assigned to each course reflecting the academic difficulty of the course. Class rank is compiled at the end of each semester beginning with freshman year.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian honors are based on a student’s weighted GPA at the end of the 8^{th} semester. A student must have attended Williamsville High School a minimum of 2 years to be considered for these honors.
Both weighted and nonweighted (standard) GPAs are included on a student’s transcript.
Nonweighted (Standard) Grade Point Average:
The nonweighted GPA is sent to colleges that WHS students apply to and is used for some scholarship competition. In calculating the nonweighted GPA, all courses are weighted the same and it is based on a 4.0 scale.
Weighted Grade Point Average:
The weighted GPA is a numeric system used to rank the scholastic performance of students. The weighted GPA is based on a 4.0 scale and as mentioned above, weights are assigned to classes based on the difficulty of the class. Weighted GPA can be used for college admissions and scholarship purposes.
The table below shows the grade weight assigned per year to different classes:

Calculating Grade Point Average (GPA):
The formula for calculating Grade Point Average (GPA) is quite simple, you add the grade values for each class and divide by the number of credits attempted.
Grades are assigned the following point values:
A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0
So for example, consider the sample report cards shown below:
Standard GPA:
Course Credit per Semester Grade Grade Value per semester
Biology 102 .5 C 1.0
English 103 Honors .5 A+ 2.125
French 1 .5 A+ 2.125
Geometry 103 Honors .5 A 1.875
Health .5 B+ 1.625
Manufacturing .5 A 2.0
PE .5 A 2.0
3.5 12.75
In this sample, the grade weight = 12.75 and the credits attempted are 3.5. So, 12.75 ÷ 3.5 = 3.64 GPA for the semester.
Weighted GPA:
Course Credit per Semester Grade Weighted Grade Value per semester
Biology 102 .5 C 1.0
English 103 Honors .5 A+ 2.655
French 1 .5 A+ 2.125
Geometry 103 Honors .5 A 2.34
Health .5 B+ 1.625
Manufacturing .5 A 2.0
PE .5 A 2.0
3.5 13.745
In this sample, the grade weight = 13.745 and the credits attempted are 3.5. So, 13.745 ÷ 3.5 = 3.93 GPA for the semester.
* Courses taken through correspondence will not be used in figuring GPA, but will be recorded on the official transcript as a pass/fail grade for graduation credit.
