Attention Juniors: Sign up to take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in the guidance office. The cost is $15. The test will be given at WHS on October 15th. Limited tests available so register early. Deadline to sign up is September 22nd. See Mrs. Chladny with questions.

 

Are you interested in a career in the medical field?  Medical Explorers Post 998 Kick Off Meeting! Yearbooks purchased by seniors who have graduated may be picked.  These books will only be given to the graduate, a sibling, or a parent.  If the graduate would like to have someone else pick up his/her yearbook, please call the office to make arrangements.

 

Lincoln Community High School's Annual College Night will be held October 16 from 6:00pm-7:30pm. This event is open to all high school students and their parents. The evening begins with a financial aid presentation followed by a college fair featuring over 35 college representatives and military recruiters. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable information in one location regarding the next step after high school. 

 

2014 Actuarial Career Fairs: Enjoy math? Like a challenge? If so, you have what it takes to be an actuary, a well-paid professional who uses math skills to solve business and social problems. Attend a career fair organized by the Actuarial Program at Illinois State University. These career fairs are open to both high school and college students. Any questions? Juniors and seniors interested in joining Scholastic Bowl this year must attend a mandatory meeting on September 24, 2014 at 7:45 or 3:30 in Room 208. Requirements for being a team member and a practice schedule will be determined at this meeting. If you cannot attend, please see Mr. Trimpe for alternate arrangements. Freshman and sophomores will meet at a later date.

Volunteer Opportunities:

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters high school mentoring program is looking for volunteers.  Mentors meet with their little sister or brother for just one hour, once per week at the little’s school.  Please see Kaylee Nichols for more information.

 

SportsCare is sponsoring the Women’s Biathlon on Sunday, September 21, 2014SportsCare is looking for volunteer students who will help with the parking for the event, monitoring the course, working drink stations, etc.  Volunteers will need to report for a volunteer meeting starting at 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the event inside Memorial SportsCare inside Kerasotes YMCA at 4550 W. Iles Ave. in Springfield, and bring the completed Volunteer Consent Form with you on the morning of the event.  Please see Mr. Martens if you are interested or have any other questions.

 

Sherman Area Chamber of Commerce – Sherman Homecoming:  For anyone needing community service hours, the Sherman Area Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Sherman Homecoming this year.  “There’s No Place Like Homecoming” will be held September 19-21 on North Peoria Road in Sherman on the East Side of the The Rail Golf Course.  There will be amusement rides, food vendors, craft vendors, concerts, kids’ activities and bands.  They are specifically looking for volunteers for their Kids Zone on Saturday, September 20, 2014, from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 1:00-5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.  If anyone is interested, please see Mr. Martens.

2014 WHS Homecoming Parade will be held on Wednesday October 1, 2014.  Parade step-off time will be 6:00pm.  Line up will start at 5:00pm.  Floats, cheerleaders, court and JFL and other teams with transportation will line up in the Student Lot(south end lot) and band, girls scouts/boy scouts, walkers, Grand Marshall will line up in the Teacher's lot(north end).  Please call or email Vicki Karras(654-1184 or composerkids@msn.com) to sign up your group and receive more information.  Please sign up by Monday September 29.  Go Bullets!!  Thanks to Sports Boosters for organizing this great event!

 

Cell Phone Found – A cell phone was found at the football game on Friday night.  Check with the WHS Office if you think it might be yours.

 

The first meeting of the Writers' Reading Club will be Thursday, Sept. 25 in Dr. Morrissey's room (215) beginning at 3:25. We'll discuss the story "The Story of an Hour," which is available outside room 215. We'll also discuss plans for the literary magazine and other creative writing projects. The meeting and discussion will last until about 4:00.  See Dr. Morrissey or Mrs. Flammini if you have questions.

 

Orders are being taken for Chamber T Shirts and Homecoming T shirts.  The Homecoming t's are also worn during class color day of homecoming week.  The cost is $10 per shirt.  Orders must be turned into Mr. Hampton or Mrs. Walsh no later than the beginning of 5th hour, Monday, September 22
